Cristian Macelaru

Newly appointed as the music director of the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, Romanian-born Cristian Măcelaru is among a new generation of conductors gaining widespread acclaim. He is making his Cleveland Orchestra debut with tonight’s concert. Cristian Măcelaru completed undergraduate studies in violin performance at the University of Miami.   He became the youngest concertmaster of the Miami Symphony Orchestra and also served as a violinist with the Houston Symphony Orchestra for two seasons. Mr. Măcelaru studied conducting with Larry Rachleff at Rice University, where he received master’s degrees in conducting and violin performance. He went on to receive the Solti Emerging Conductor Award in 2012, followed by the 2014 Solti Conducting Award. Mr. Măcelaru subsequently served as conductor-in-residence with the Philadelphia Orchestra. In recent seasons, Cristian Măcelaru has guest conducted many North American orchestras, as well as leading performances in Bavaria, England, Denmark, Netherlands, Germany, and Japan.
